Stephen Twigg for West Derby

I have been selected by local Labour Party members to stand to become the next Member of Parliament for West Derby. It is a great honour to have this opportunity and I am spending my time meeting local residents, visiting community organisations and taking up local issues.

From the next General Election West Derby will consist of Croxteth, Knotty Ash, Norris Green, Tuebrook & Stoneycroft, West Derby and Yew Tree. The constituency includes Alder Hey and Broad Green hospitals and Croxteth Country Park.

Liverpool Local Elections 2008
The 2008 Liverpool City Council elections were Labour's best Council results in Liverpool since 1996 - congratulations to Joe Anderson and his team. Labour won exactly half the seats (15 out of 30) and came close to winning 2 more. There is a very good prospect of a Labour administration here in 2010.

Congratulations to Rose Bailey and Frank Cooke on their very convincing re-election in Croxteth and Norris Green respectively. Well done to John Prince who gained a second seat for Labour in Yew Tree. I spent election day in Knotty Ash where Labour's Tony Concepcion reduced the Lib Dem majority to just 35. Tony fought a superb campaign and would have been an excellent addition to the Council.

In West Derby ward Brenda McGrath came a strong second and increased Labour's vote and in Tuebrook & Stoneycroft Bob Millington held second place for Labour.

Elsewhere in the country it was mostly a terrible night for Labour so Liverpool really bucked the national trend. My thanks to local Party members who worked so hard for these results.

May I also congratulate the successful candidates from other parties - Steve Radford, Dave Irving and Graham Hulme. As the Labour Parliamentary Candidate I know there will be many local issues on which we can work together on a cross-party basis.
Promoted by Chris Lennie, Acting General Secretary, the Labour Party,on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
Hosted by Tangent Labs, 32-42 East Road, London, N1  6AD, England, UK
