Stephen Twigg for West Derby

I have been selected by local Labour Party members to stand to become the next Member of Parliament for West Derby. It is a great honour to have this opportunity and I am spending my time meeting local residents, visiting community organisations and taking up local issues.

From the next General Election West Derby will consist of Croxteth, Knotty Ash, Norris Green, Tuebrook & Stoneycroft, West Derby and Yew Tree. The constituency includes Alder Hey and Broad Green hospitals and Croxteth Country Park.

Council plans to close Croxteth Comprehensive

On 12th June I attended a meeting at Croxteth School for parents and pupils where the school's Head, Richard Baker, outlined the Council's plans for reorganising local secondary schools. There was a very strong feeling amongst the 250 or so people who came in favour of keeping the school open.

I will be working with local Labour councillor Rose Bailey on this. The Liverpool Select Committee on Education & Skills will be scrutinising the Council's plans. I have been in contact with the Committee's Chair, Jane Corbett, to press for the voices of Croxteth School to be heard during the committee's enquiry. I have visited the school several times now and have been impressed both by the teaching & learning there and by its close links with the local community.

The school has a vision for becoming a campus to educate people of all ages and I urge Liverpool City Council to consider this option as an alternative to closing the school.
